There is no time of year when we can’t wear a plaid shirt. Whether winter or summer, there is always an option that becomes ideal and, many times, the favorite garment of the season.

Types of checked shirts
· Window
Window-type squares are those in which the straight lines that make up the print are thinner and the squares are larger. The background color is the main protagonist, while the color of the lines represents a simple break for homogeneity.
This type of print is usually quite classic and combines perfectly with any type of pants. When choosing colors, making sure that the pants and the line of the shirt are of the same range but of different shades can create a fantastic outfit for a winning look.
· Vichy or tablecloth
In the French city that gives its name to this type of painting, the print was used for tablecloths and napkins starting in the 17th century. Beginning with World War II, this fabric began to be used in shirts for men and women who worked in the fields.
In principle, gingham and tablecloth paintings are similar, but the latter are usually larger than the former.
Although it is still a style with a certain farmer air, the truth is that this cotton fabric in which the squares are superimposed on a white background is common in offices and more urban contexts.
· Tattersall or English window
The Tattersall is a print of equestrian origin that received its name from a horse race held in London’s Hyde Park in the 19th century. That fabric was used in the blankets that covered the animals, until English tailors found another application for it.
This print is characterized by being woven with two threads in not very striking colors on a cream or white background. Whether due to its origin or the mix of colors, it combines best with a casual style, although it can also be worn with a tie.
· Scottish or tartan
The Highlands, or high provinces of Scotland, were the creators of tartan, a wool fabric with vertical and horizontal stripes in different shades on a colored background. The first reference to this material dates back to 1538 and the fact that it is still used today has made it one of the symbols of this British region. In fact, it is with it that kilts are made, the even more famous Scottish skirts that each clan adapted and turned into a family seal and legacy.
In the case of Scottish shirts, the truth is that they tend, contradictorily, to be considered modern.The original wool gave way to other much lighter fabrics that preserve the print and combine perfectly with jeans or black sports pants.
· Lumberjack
The lumberjack paintings are usually similar to the aforementioned tablecloth paintings, but instead of being based on a white background, black usually has an important presence on a strong color.
It is common for lumberjack shirts to evoke the forest, winter and, in some way, the cold. Generally, they are autumn or winter shirts, although they are often also used in mid-season periods as a jacket. And it is not surprising, because they are usually made of thick and warm cottons.
These types of shirts are usually ideal for leisure time and look perfect with jeans or sports pants.
· Madras
Madras refers to a city in India that, today, is known as Chennai. This enclave became famous for its cotton fabrics, which were also dyed in bright colors, which is, essentially, what differentiates them from Scottish plaids.
In madras paintings, the intersections between the lines are of a third tone that generally achieves the print.
Their color is usually quite striking, so it is more common to wear them in summer than in winter and without wearing anything on top. That same reason makes them ideal for casual styles, combined with jeans or chinos.
Are checked shirts informal?
After reviewing all the types of paintings in which we find men’s shirts, it seems that the majority are associated with informal or casual looks. That’s probably the case, but there are some fabrics with small checks in discreet shades that are ideal for combining with suits in semi-formal contexts.
